Sir,
Hongkong,
February, 1901.
With reference to the above quoted far
Office Getter, I have the honour to forward a tracing of a portion
of Crown Lani takan over by the War Deoactaent; also copies of correspondence with the Colonial Government on the subject.
3.
I beg to remark that the price asked for
the ground by the Colonial Authorities is in my ooinion exorbi- tant. The ground mentioned as being worth six dollars a square
foot is on the sea level, and has wharfage rights and is quite
worth the money for business ourooses.
3.
The ground in question however, is 8019
hundreds of feet above the sea and of no possible use for
business purposes. The nearest residential house on the зa00
road is over 300 yards distant, and I cannot think that such a
price shoull be askel for what is practicably waste land.
I have etc.,
(31.) W. J.. Jascoigne, Major-General, Commanding Proops in China.
